Miami, FL, Thursday, August 6th, 2026. Ford is expanding its electric vehicle portfolio with the introduction of the Ford Fathom, a new mid-size electric pickup designed to make EV ownership more accessible than ever. Available for pre-order in early 2027, the standard-range battery model will start at an MSRP of $28,350, placing it squarely in the heart of the affordable electric truck market.
But its competitive price is only part of the story.
Ford developed the Fathom for drivers who want a vehicle that is equally capable during the workweek and on weekend adventures. The result is a midsize electric pickup that offers more passenger space than a Toyota RAV4, comfortable seating for five adults, and an impressive combination of technology, functionality, and everyday practicality.
Inside, the Fathom features a large, high-resolution touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a Digital Key, and bidirectional power capability, allowing owners to power tools, appliances, or outdoor equipment directly from the truck. In addition, a spacious front trunk (frunk) and versatile cargo bed provide exceptional flexibility for work, travel, and recreation.
Technology is another area where the Fathom stands out. Every truck is BlueCruise capable, allowing drivers to enjoy Ford’s advanced hands-free driving technology on compatible highways. Integration with Apple Maps creates a seamless navigation experience from on-ramp to off-ramp, making long-distance driving more convenient and intuitive.
A Name with Meaning
Unlike many automakers that rely on alphanumeric model names, Ford wanted this new pickup to have a genuine identity and personality.
After a nine-month naming process, the company selected the name Fathom, a word rich in history and symbolism.
Originally, a “fathom” referred to the distance between a person’s outstretched arms—approximately six feet—which sailors used as a unit to measure the depth of water. Over time, the word evolved to mean something much deeper: to fully understand or comprehend something.
For Ford, that meaning perfectly reflects the philosophy behind the truck. The Fathom was created after years of studying and understanding the needs of a new generation of customers looking for an electric pickup that delivers value, capability, technology, and versatility without compromise.
A Careful Selection Process
The name wasn’t chosen overnight.
Ford’s branding team explored more than a century of the company’s naming history, reviewing iconic models such as the Galaxie, Taurus, and Ranchero, searching for a name that could communicate depth, emotion, and authenticity.
Interestingly, two Ford copywriters independently proposed the name Fathom, and it remained on the shortlist throughout months of internal evaluations and consumer focus groups.
Before each decision meeting, members of the naming team even surveyed engineers working on the project to identify their favorite candidates. One engineer—whose profile closely matched the truck’s target customer—consistently predicted the winning name during every round of evaluations.
In the end, Fathom emerged as the clear favorite.
With the new Fathom, Ford is introducing much more than an affordable electric pickup. It delivers a vehicle that combines advanced technology, generous interior space, practical functionality, and a carefully chosen identity designed to create an emotional connection with drivers from the very first mile.
